BCIL is the management agency for the Small Business Innovation Research Initiative (SBIRI), a scheme launched during September, 2005 by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT). The aim of the scheme is to encourage small and medium scale industries to take up risk in innovative R&D in biotech sector. During this period of a year and a half from the launching of the scheme, more than 250 proposals from small and medium entrepreneurs were received.
